I worked the Noosa Winter Festival this year for http://www.marathon-photos.com.
It was a beautiful warm day – starting off at about 10 degrees at the 160km cycle start at 6:30am.
I shot with a wide angle 16-35mm lens all day gaining me the opportunity for some amazing angles I normally never get with a long lens.
Below are some of my favourites including:
Lying inside the turning point for the half marathon. Looks like some of these runners are about to step on me.

Clare Geraghty won the women’s half marathon, start of the 10km and some of the finishers in the 10 and 5km races including the Never Give Up team!

The 160km cycle finished in just under 4 hours and was a photo finish between the police bike and the two cyclists racing for the line.

I found the two women who run Noosa and they were happy to pose for me!

I shot the Nissan BRW Corporate Triathlon again this year for Triathlon-Photos. This year I was mostly on runners – and mostly at the finish line. Spending a long time in one spot can be boring, but not when you get your day livened up by some funny sights and friendly people.
Here is just a glimpse through my lens at the day.
For this race only – 29 April 2012 Race 3, we are offering a 2 for 1 price on photos purchased.
Why?
We are perfectionists! But sometimes we stuff up. And the event on Sunday was an example of that. As a result some of the photos are less than perfect. In most cases they can be fixed in Photoshop so you will still get a quality result – see the example below. Technically what happened is we were shooting roller derby indoors on the day before the event and forgot to change our spot metering settings for Sunday’s race. This meant a number of the photos appear overexposed as displayed on the website. We can fix that for the photos we edit but we didn’t want to edit 4500 photos individually.
So here’s the deal. Pay for 1 photo, get two, Or get two photos, pay for one. Whichever way you look at its half price.
There are several galleries of photos. Where possible race numbers have been used in the photo titles and can be searched for on the website.
The photos are in the sub galleries:
We now have a light box setup so you can view your photos with an easy next previous system.

I was invited to come and experience the Roller Derby madness on Saturday by non other than Boris SushiSlammer McCong. In fact I have discovered these women all have awesome nicknames – like Cat KittenB-Hittin Murray, Vivki Pink-vengeance Isaacs, Thundapuss, Cranky Pixie and Bravetart.
And what an amazing sport. Each bout goes for two 30 minute halves and they are high intensity with body slams, falls, crashes and hard skating.
I shot some of the madness indoors in a basketball stadium so had all sorts of interesting technical problems to overcome. I tried several techniques including high ISO stadium lighting shots to slow shutter speed motion blur shots frozen with a remote flash.
All of the reasonable efforts have gone into these folders:

Sporting images Australia had five shooters at the 2012 Mooloolaba Triathlon – all ages event. I shot 10,300 frames for them that day – there were four of us who shot over 10K images for the day.
I spend most of my time on the bike mount at the transition exit point. To be honest I was embarrassed by the total ineptitude seen by probably 80% of the competitors. Nearly all the competitors were unable to perform a basic mount of a bike. A few competitors were able to throw themselves onto a bike – the top category men nearly all could. Most of the top women could also scoot mount. The rest had a variety of hilarious ways of how not to do it.
Most of the general public who spend lots of money on time saving devices like aero bars and speed helmets and disced wheels etc. – who might just get a few seconds per km advantage out of these expensive devices – would be better off spending some time (at no cost) learning how to mount a bike. Might save them 10-20 seconds easily.
The funny thing was people were running with their bikes to the mount line (and a few who mounted early being “instructed” by the technical officials to get off and remount) and then they stopped there and proceed to in various ways get astride the bike and attempt to clip in. Most of them were then causing blockages for people behind them – there were more than a few tangles and shouted curses at people who weren’t looking behind them when they suddenly stopped and laid their bikes over so they could step over the bar. Some were considerate and went to the sides.
All my images are available from the Sporting Images Australia website. However I am putting some “how to” and “how not to” photos on here as well as a few of my favourite “arty” shots.
How to mount a bike – examples by male and females.
- Run with bike using seat not handlebars to push.
- Approaching the mount point shift both hands tot he handle bars and weight to handlebars. Keep momentum up as this is necessary so you don’t fall off.
- Launch off the ground using left foot (if on left side of bike) and land on the saddle.
- Get both feet onto the pedals and push a couple of revs to get balance and speed up.
- Once settled into the bike get feet into shoes.
How to scoot mount.
Note – this can be done with shoes on the bike or on your feet. Example a woman competitor with shoes on the bike.
- While running pushing bike by saddle with the right hand get left hand onto handle bars.
- Time your balance to get the left foot onto the left pedal. If necessary “scoot” a little to get through traffic or get your balance and speed up.
- With all weight on left foot and left hand shift right hand to handlebar and swing right leg over the seat and onto right pedal. Remain standing on the pedals and get some momentum up before sitting down and getting feet into shoes.
Scoot mounting with shoes – both running and cycle shoes with cleats.
How not to mount.
- Run to middle of the road. come to a complete stop and make yourself about 3 people wide.
- Get on bike awkwardly by stepping over the top bar.
- Ride off eventually. (Some people took over 30 seconds to get on their bike and clip their feet in before they even pushed off.(
- Negate the effect of the fancy helmet.
Oh and some final tips.
- If using rear of saddle mounted bottles make sure you don’t swing your leg into them sending them flying.
- When racking your bike in transition put it into the gear you actually want to start in.
- Try not to ride into the photographer.
The inaugural Australian Triathlon Youth Championships were held 22 and 23 March at the Novotel Twin Waters Resort. It was pouring with rain most of the day and the conditions were tough for all competitors with slipper footing and road surfaces. However there were only a couple of minor accidents and the competitors handled the tough conditions very well indeed.
Dreamsport Photography was on hand to capture all the action from the swim to the cycle and run.

InTraining Events organise the Brisbane Twilight Run each year – including a half marathon as the signature event. I was shooting for www.supersportimages.com this year. Please go to their website to buy images.
I have included a few from my setup shots around the location I was shooting at and the marshals working that area. Because of the difficult lighting conditions I took a lot of set up shots with the lenses I was going to be working with sorting out angles, lighting and shadows and framing. Most of these shots are either of random people or the marshals. I have included a few from the 10km and half marathon also.
Bicycle Queensland holds a public awareness bike week every year. It is a festival of all things cycling. I shot the Great Brisbane Bike Ride which includes the Mt Cootha Challenge. an 85km bike ride round Brisbane including a climb over Mt Cootha. There are also shorter events including 10km, 30km and 50km.
Dreamsport Photography was shooting for www.sportingimages.com.au so we are not selling these images. Please go their site if you want to buy them.
Lots of people ride and get involved and I was mostly shooting the finish line. I have included some of the shots I captured including winners (everybody is a winner), grinners, tandems and recliners and tow-alongs, little kids and some of the crowd and officials. there was even one post finish line crash.
